A Little Introduction
Hi! I’m Mama Savage, and I am both a professional sweet and savory Chef! I’ve spent years working under an amazing French Chef, but have recently begun to focus on my growing family. Being a Mom of two has only fueled my drive to be the very best Chef I can be, I strive to ensure my family is not only well fed but gets to experience a wide variety of delicious flavors and culinary techniques. When my son was 4 months old I began making homemade purees for him to discover foods early on, and when he reached 6 months old I challenged myself to make healthy baby safe foods that my husband and I could enjoy as well.
Smash Cake Story
When my son had his first birthday I knew that I had to bake his smash cake myself! With the theme being ‘Galaxy’ I knew I had my work cut out for myself. But, I wanted to stick with my healthy & yummy goal for his foods. I ended up nixing all food coloring and made a whipped honey & Mascarpone frosting, with honey serving as my only sweetener. Then in order to make the cake match the galaxy theme I separated out the frosting into several bowls, and added various smashed berries into each one. Getting a deep purple from blackberries, a soft violet from blueberries, and a light red from strawberries and raspberries. I used these colors to decorate the banana cake which was sweetened using only honey. And I filled the cake with a light and airy berry mousse!
I know that most people hear “no sugar, no food coloring, baby friendly” and assume its going to taste like cardboard… But this cake was a crowd pleaser all around! From my coworkers at the bakery, to my husband and family! Everyone loved this take on a berry and honey cake!
My Goal?
With this blog my goal is to not just encourage others to explore new recipes and flavors, but to help show that cooking and baking don’t need to be so scary! Anyone can create delicious meals for any time of day, and I want to help show you that. I’ve heard it said many times that its harder to bake than it is to cook, but I believe the only real reason so many people struggle with baking is a lack of beginner friendly recipes.
While not all of my recipes will be beginner friendly, my goal will be to have a variety of skill levels acknowledged in my posts. Along with tips I’ve come across in my years of working in professional kitchens. AND from my own experiences teaching both baking & cooking with people who truly had no faith in themselves. Sometimes when we are struggling with a new hobby or skill we beat ourselves up, so I’ll be including my most hilarious memories from my teaching days and even some stories from cooking with my husband. (Including a rather common mistake of switching sugar and salt!) But at the end of all of these stories none of the students (or my husband) ever gave up, and ended up creating something truly delicious!
AND SO CAN YOU!! SO LETS GET COOKING!
